     Curriculum Studies

  • Report: UH, Manoa College of Education Program

Curriculum Studies Department

Curriculum in general refers to the course of studies offered by an educational institution.  The Curriculum Studies department at UH, Manoa works to develop the professional qualifications of licensed teachers as they increase their curricular knowledge in specific areas of preschool/primary, elementary, middle, or secondary education.  Closely related to the Teaching department and MEdT Program, Curriculum Studies in 2009 is chaired by Andrea Bartlett, PhD, with offices in Everly Hall, at 1776 University Avenue.  The program is found on the Internet at www.coe.hawaii.edu/cs

The department offers a master's of education (MEd) in curriculum studies, and a doctorate (PhD) in education with a specialization in curriculum studies.  The programs guide degree-seekers to develop  a variety of teaching and service skills throughout their course of studies.

Within the degrees, there are a variety of concentration areas available.  For example: art education, health, language arts, mathematics, multicultural, physical, science, and social studies education.  The secondary level includes career, technology, and technical education, as well as world languages.  Thus students have a chance to become highly developed in a chosen field, perhaps one they previously had lacked expertise in.  This can be a benefit in employment.  With constantly shifting demands for educators, and the more constant needs for science and mathematics specialists, the curriculum studies department offers an excellent path to improving our public schools.

Applying to this department requires the regular Graduate Division application and documentation, as well as the program's specific admissions criteria and application.  As a variety of students, local, national, or international may apply, scorers for the TOEFL and GRE can also be required.  Those completing the courses of study and certainly be well rounded and much better prepared as highly qualified educators in their chosen fields.  However, as curriculum studies does not lead to licensure, it would not be a substitute for those seeking to teach in the DOE public schools at the levels offered in their areas of concentration.
